Sediment filters eliminate suspended solids from entering your water supply and water filtration systems via mechanical filtration. Sediment filters are recommended for food and beverage preparation, commercial and industrial processes, residential whole house filtration, and prefilters for water filtration systems like reverse osmosis and UV purification. Sediment filters are the first line of defense against dirt and debris polluting your water.
What a sediment filter removes:
Sediment filters remove dirt, debris, rust, sand, silt, and all other suspended solid particles from your water.
Types of sediment filtration
- • Depth filters create a gradient by layering porous media of increasing density. The micron rating of the exterior of a depth filter is much greater than the micron rating of the filter’s core. Depth filters capture progressively smaller particulate matter as water flows through them. Depth filters are either melt-blown or string-wound. These filters are made of polypropylene, cotton, nylon, or rayon.
- • Surface filters trap sediment by direct interception of particulate matter greater than its micron-rated pore size. Surface filters are designed to trap larger particulate matter. Their expansive surface area prolongs their filter life and allows them to capture sediment of uniform size. Surface filters are often known as pleated or grooved.
When to use a sediment filter:
Whole house filtration: Sediment filters prevent particulate matter from prematurely exhausting other filtration media like carbon and ceramic. When these filters are compelled to process large amounts of sediment, their capacity to reduce other contaminants is greatly diminished. Sediment filters remove large particulate matter, allowing your whole house system to target contaminants like chlorine, VOCs, and bacteria with greater efficacy.
Ultraviolet (UV) purification: A UV purification system cannot function optimally in water laden with sediment. Sediment creates shadowing in the UV chamber that hides organisms and allows them to pass through undetected. A sediment prefilter allows for the water to be exposed to the full ultraviolet dosage and ensures high disinfection performance.
Reverse osmosis: Sediment prefilters are necessary components of a reverse osmosis system. Reverse osmosis is capable of eliminating sediment from your water supply, but brine filled with sediment will clog your flow restrictor. A sediment prefilter protects the restrictor from becoming burdened with suspended solids, as well as protects the carbon prefilter from premature depletion.
Factors to consider when choosing a sediment filter:
- • Length
- • Diameter
- • Flow capacity
- • Filter type
- • Micron rating
Spin-down filters & sediment trappers
A spin-down filter is a whole house sediment filtration system that utilizes centrifugal force to separate large sediment matter from the water supply. Spin down filters and sediment trappers are effective prefilters for residential or industrial applications. These filters can be flushed of their sediment accumulation and do not require cartridge replacements.
Applications for sediment filters include:
- • Potable water
- • Food & beverage
- • Reverse osmosis prefiltration
- • Chemicals
- • Solvents
- • Lubricants
- • Fuels
- • Coolants
- • Aqueous solutions
- • Photo solutions
- • Electronics & microelectronics
- • Mineral & synthetic oils
- • Wastewater
