Specialty cartridges also function as calcite feeder, pH adjuster, acid neutralizer, and dechlorinizer. Fluoride has been added to city water supplies since 1945 to prevent tooth decay. Tooth decay is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide whose burdens particularly fall on children and the poor. The use of flouride, however, presents a conflict between the common good and individual rights. Typical levels in the water supply range from 0.5 to 1.0 ppm of fluoride added depending on climate. Interestingly, the U.S. EPA lists the maximum contaminant level (MCL) of fluoride allowed at 4.0 ppm as at that level it represents a health risk.

The ScaleStick provides superior limescale (calcium carbonate) prevention and corrosion control in water fed equipment. A controlled amount of specially blended scale control compounds is fed into the water stream to provide the most effective treatment for a long period of time. ScaleSafe is released at a constant rate resulting in consistent scale prevention and removal over time.
