Poor water quality can affect the taste and appearance of both carbonated and non-carbonated beverages. Chlorine and chloramines, commonly used disinfectants in municipal water supplies, can adversely affect the taste of carbonated beverages, ice, tea, coffee, and juices. This off-taste can result in diminished repeat business and lowered drink profits for any operation.

Water can actually damage foodservice equipment. Scale from unfiltered water can build up in ice machines and coffee equipment, clogging distribution tubes and solenoid valves. Evaporator plates and heating elements become coated with scale, resulting in poor efficiency and equipment beak down. Sediment can clog a post-mix pump and reduce water flow.
